If you had to guess what the #1 most blocked site of 2010 was, what would you pick? What site would you always ensure is blocked on your office network?
The most blocked categories of web sites are what you might expect . . . those associated with pornography, discrimination, adware, etc. But the most blocked individual siteIf you chose Facebook, you'd be right! According to a survey by OpenDNS more than 23% of business users who filter web content for employees choose to block Facebook. Slightly less frequent are MySpace and YouTube. By contrast, the most whitelisted sites are the same social media type sites - Youtube, Facebook, etc. The fact that many of the same sites appear on both the top ten Blacklisted as well as Whitelisted websites indicates the diverse perspectives people have regarding many of these social media sites in the workplace.
Let's not forget about phishing. By far the most frequently spoofed website in every month of 2010 was PayPal. PayPal was targeted nine times more frequently than the next most frequent target, Facebook. And of course, The vast majority of phishing websites were hosted in the United States — more than 60,000 separate attempts came from websites hosted right here.
