Heartland Hacker: Gov't Made Me Do It!

In follow up developments on the Heartland Payment Systems data breach of a few years ago, CU Info Security reports that convicted hacker Albert Gonzalez claims that the government made him steal 130 million credit and debit card numbers from companies such as Heartland Payment Systems, TJX, Office Max and restaurant chain Dave & Buster’s.

Gonzalez filed a federal district court petition in March to overturn his conviction and 20-year sentence. He says he committed his crimes with the knowledge of his Secret Service handlers. His 25-page petition also says that his lawyers mishandled his case. Gonzalez contends that, as a government informer, he was made to feel as if he were part of the Secret Service team. "They treated me like one of their own and I began to feel like part of the Secret Service agency."
