Caribou Coffee, announced it was the recent target of a data breach. After identifying some unusual activity on their network on November 28, they engaged a cyber security firm to further investigate to determine if there had been unauthorized access to their network. On November 30, the company confirmed that some cardholder data may have been exposed for transactions completed between August 28 and December 3, 2018, and which point the issue was contained. The company reported that transactions for online catering orders or payments made through their card loyalty programs were not impacted. The company has fully cooperated with the cyber security firm to contain the
issue.
Hackers were able to maximize their efforts by targeting the POS systems of hundreds of the company’s locations across both their Bruegger’s Bagels and Caribou Coffee brands, placing cardholder data at risk including cardholder name and full card magnetic stripe information. Locations in Minnesota were most heavily impacted, however there were also locations impacted in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin.
Vermont Bruegger's Bagels locations in Burlington and Brattleboro were affected. There are no Caribou Coffee locations in Vermont.
