Last week Reuters reported that Apple won an initial patent victory against mobile phone and tablet manufacturer HTC. The U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that HTC, which uses the Android operating system, infringed on two Apple patents. The judgement handed Apple an early victory that could have large implications on HTC’s business in the U.S., and potential impacts on the overall Android platform.

The development poses a threat for all Android based mobile manufacturers because one or both of the patents in the Apple/HTC dispute are based on software built into the core of the Android operating system. Apple also has a suit on the same issues against Motorola. That could lead to more headaches for other Android manufacturers, who could face similar suits from Apple and the threat of an ITC ban of their products.
