Calendar year 2018 brought with it over 1,200 data breaches, affecting over 560 million records. Credit Union Times researched the worst data breaches of the year, some of which don't technically meet the traditional definition of data breach. That's because technically, a data breach is considered an incident potentially putting personally identifiable information at risk and includes not only a person's name . . . . but either their Social Security number, driver’s license number, medical or financial record (credit/debit cards included). Not all of the 12 biggest breaches of 2018 according to CU Times meet that criteria, but all are notable due to magnitude of size. Their list includes:
- Starwood Hotels & Resorts (Marriott International): 383 to 500 Million Records
- Facebook-Connected Incidents: 184 Million Records
- My Fitness Pal: 150 million Records
- Quora: 100 Million Records
- Firebase: 100 Million Records
- Ticketfly: 27 Million Records
- GovPayNow.com: 14 million Records
- Cathay Pacific: 9.4 Million Records
- Hudson Bay Company: 5 Million Records
- Jason’s Deli: 3.4 Million Records
- AccuDoc Solutions: 2.7 Million Records
- T-Mobile: 2 Million Records
